約押偵察城的時候，知道敵人哪裏有勇士，就派烏利亞到那地方。城裏的人出來和約押打仗，大衛的僕人中有幾個士兵被殺，赫人烏利亞也死了。於是，約押派人去將戰爭的一切事奏告大衛，又吩咐使者說：「你把戰爭的一切事對王說完了，王若發怒，對你說：『你們打仗為甚麼挨近城呢？豈不知敵人會從城牆上射箭嗎？從前擊殺耶路比設的兒子亞比米勒的是誰呢？豈不是一個婦人從城牆上拋下一塊上磨石來，打在他身上，他就死在提備斯嗎？你們為甚麼挨近城牆呢？』你就說：『你的僕人赫人烏利亞也死了。』」使者就去，照着約押所吩咐的一切話來奏告大衛。使者對大衛說：「敵人強過我們，出到郊外攻打我們，我們把他們趕回到城門口。弓箭手從城牆上射你的僕人，射死幾個王的僕人，你的僕人赫人烏利亞也死了。」大衛向使者說：「你對約押這樣說：『不要為這事難過，因為刀劍可能吞滅這人或那人。你只管竭力攻城，將城傾覆。』你要勉勵約押。」

你要劃定一條路，使刀來到亞捫人的拉巴，來到猶大，在堅固城耶路撒冷。
